To Unify or Divide? - That's the Question!

This interesting image that featured on a friend's status got me thinking on 'What does it take for a leader to bring together and not separate?' I could think of three characteristics. Feel free to add to the list.

Firstly, it takes a confident leader to bring people together. Now no one can be confident all the time and in all situations. Confidence as the dictionary defines it, is the ability to rely on something/one. In this case, can we say it's one or few sturdy substance(s) about a leader that makes him/her believe that there's something in me I can always rely on, and I don't fear bringing people together?!?

The second is, a secure leader isn't afraid to bring people together. They create groups and forums, allow discussions and debates, have people's support and at times are even questioned or challenged They still see strength in togetherness!

Thirdly, a leader who has an open or transparent agenda doesn't fear bringing people together. They have little to hide and so can probably say 'the more the merrier'!

Ever thought about it? Divide and rule is probably the dictum of a leader who lacks confidence, or feels insecure or has a hidden agenda or...?!? And the time, the resources and the efforts that go in to keep people apart is unparalleled and not sure if it's really worth it!

Whatever be our sphere of influence, be it large or small, one could ponder - what kind of a leader am I - One who brings people (my team) together or keeps people apart? Why do I do what I do?
